Our Ethiopia educational was ‘exceptional’ say UK Tour Operators

10 top UK Tour Operators travelled to Ethiopia for the first time in March on an educational, or familiarisation trip as they are also known in the travel trade.

The 9 day itinerary was designed and hosted by Kibran Tours so the operators could explore the gems in the northern Ethiopian highlands, visiting the city of Addis Ababa, Lake Tana and the source of the Blue Nile,  the castles of Gondar, the monuments of the Axumite Empire and the rock hewn churches at Lalibela.

The group then got to fly on a private charter flight over the Rift Valley lakes south of Addis to the Bale Mountains, to enjoy more incredible landscapes and the wildlife and  bird watching activities in the surrounding forest.

The programme finished with a cocktail reception back in Addis, where the operators were able to network with those involved in the promotion of Ethiopia’s Tourism industry, including representatives from the Ministry of Culture & Tourism, the newly formed Ethiopian Tourism Organisation, Ethiopian Airlines, Hotel and Lodge Managers, private Air Charter operators and others who were keen to meet the UK operators.

Janet Shankland from One Greenstone, who co-hosted the group, said that they all had an amazing time exploring Ethiopia and declared the fam trip a great success.  “The operators have gained extensive product knowledge of the tourist offering and they are excited about setting up new programmes and sending their clients to Ethiopia.”

The operators were equally impressed with Ethiopia and said the highlights of the tour included the boat trip to the Island Monasteries on Lake Tana, the serenity of Kuriftu Resort & Spa, Gondar’s Debre Berhan church and the Four Sisters Restaurant, having an archaeologist explain the wonders of Axum, the views and the stargazing from the roof of Mountain View Hotel, the truly magnificent churches at Lalibela, the Sanetti Plateau in the Bale Mountains and meeting so many friendly and hospitable people!

What the tour operators said about the familiarisation trip:

“A very well thought through itinerary and useful for me to visit all the destinations we visit on our programmes. It is crucial that we are up-to-date with hotel changes and as well as any new developments that can be conveyed to the team back home”

“Thanks to all involved for making this one of the most enjoyable trips I have ever taken!”

“I was very impressed by the professionalism of Kibran Tours on the ground from start to finish.  It was an excellent idea to finish with a cocktail party and a great opportunity to network with key people all working to improve tourism in Ethiopia.”

“Thanks again for a very well-organised fam trip….looking forward to sending you clients.”

“Dawit (Kibran tour leader) was exceptional, his knowledge was immense and his sense of humour was lovely.  I thoroughly enjoyed listening to him and he made everything run smoothly”

“One of the best fam trips I’ve been on, a fascinating country, well organised and thoroughly enjoyable. I can’t wait to go back!”

“Dawit was fantastic!! He was so knowledgeable and full of enthusiasm. He was a pleasure to meet.”

“Everything Kibran Tours provided and did on the trip was fantastic.  We were very spoilt, and very well taken care of throughout the trip.”

“My product knowledge has been improved dramatically and my enthusiasm to sell Ethiopia has grown. I loved every minute of it.”

“Thank you again for allowing me the opportunity to visit this magnificent place!”
