Travel Trends for 2017

Posted in News on December 6th, 2016 by One Greenstone

It’s that time of year when travel publications and travel agents predict what destinations and experiences they think will be hot for the following year.

There will always be those holidaymakers looking for sun, sea and sand who are happy to lounge at the beach or poolside with a cocktail in hand, but the growing trend in the travel industry over the past few years has been for more transformational or ‘experiential’ holidays where holidaymakers can immerse themselves in the destination and enjoy more of a cultural experience.

This trend is equally apparent in the luxury sector as it is for the adventure travel sector, and now it is becoming increasingly popular to seek out a combination of the two.  We have always been involved with both luxury and adventure travel so it is fantastic news for us and our clients and shows we are bang on if not slightly ahead of the curve!

Here are some of the picks from recently published hot lists for 2017 and we see there is a common theme…

Lonely Planet award the ‘best in travel’ every year to their top 10 picks of destinations, countries, cities and regions to visit.  With an eye on sustainable travel and with the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development in 2017, they rightly suggest 2017 as the perfect time to start thinking about how you can make travel decisions that benefit the planet and its peoples, as well as yourself.

Exploring new destinations is the coming year’s top travel motivator for luxury travel according to Forbes. For 2017, luxury travellers are seeking adventures in less explored areas and craving customised local experiences wherever they roam.

The annual Virtuoso Luxe Report has been released and for the first time included a breakdown from the Australian market.  The number 1 prediction is based on bucket lists with the recommendation to head now for destinations with a sense of urgency: ones that are changing rapidly or even disappearing.  The other dominant trend is the seeking out of active journeys, as adventure travel soars even higher in 2017.

Booking.com predicts that 2017 promises to see travellers unleashing their inner explorer like never before.  Whether it’s trekking into a remote mountain village or finding a gem of a guest house on the other side of tracks, they are seeing evidence of an ever-growing appetite to embrace undiscovered environments in an authentic way.

The United Nations 70th General Assembly has designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.

United Nations Secretary-General, Banki-moon commented “With more than one billion international tourists now traveling the world each year, tourism has become a powerful and transformative force that is making a genuine difference in the lives of millions of people. The potential of tourism for sustainable development is considerable.  As one of the world’s leading employment sectors, tourism provides important livelihood opportunities, helping to alleviate poverty and drive inclusive development.”
